Pepper USA - Almost half of the imports came from Indonesia in 2009 2010/05/06
The United States imported 65,855 mt of pepper in 2009, comprising 49,148 mt of black, 6,289 mt of white and 10,419 mt of ground pepper. Compared to import of 64,789 mt in 2008, there was a marginal increase of 2%. The increase was due to significant increase in the import of ground pepper from 8,204 mt in 2008 to 10,419 mt in 2009. Import of black and white pepper decreased, by 1% and 10% respectively.
During 2009, Indonesia strengthened its position as the most important source for the United States, supplying 40% of pepper, followed by Vietnam (25%), Brazil and India (16% respectively). In February 2010, import of pepper into the United States was 3,814 mt, showing a significant fall of around 35% from 5,817 mt in the previous month. This was due to significant fall of import from Indonesia. During January – February 2010, USA has imported 9,631 mt, recording a decrease of 3% from 9,883 mt in the same period last year. Whole black and white pepper decreased, while ground pepper increased significantly by 36%.
